A look back at my scandy adventure, crossing Sweden and into Denmark, through vast forests and countryside, exploring Theme Parks, Sightseeing and mastering the Train Network!

Exploring Gothenburg and the city museum

A quieter day of the trip, but no less full of intrigue!

I began the day with a trip to Gothenburg’s City Museum alongside the Göta älv river. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this, but the sheer scale and breadth of artefacts and knowledge here is incredible.

Tracing over 12,000 years of history from the prehistoric age to its establishment as a city in 1621, this is not just a journey through time for Gothenburg but for the world as a whole.

Recreations of old settlements and how people would’ve lived, the changing architecture, what they would’ve worn, the possessions they would’ve owned. It was fascinating and comprehensive, right up to the modern day alluding to a time capsule for the future.

It was then time to grab a late lunch, and I didn’t really have much of a plan for where. I discovered a food hall nearby, where you instantly felt hungry upon entering, so grabbed a pork dish with potatos dining on a stool watching the world go by.

The rest of the afternoon was spent wandering Gothenburg, its thriving retail centre and its tranquil seaport on the outskirts. It gave me Cologne vibes with its extensive tram network, student community and some of its architecture. Like Cologne, it was also something of an unsung hero of the country.

I found quite randomly a fabricated beach along the port, where I put my feet up for a bit. I noticed a commuter ferry that took passengers across the water to Lindholm. Although I didn’t get off there, it was great to have a round-trip on the river looking back at the city, and imagining how it would’ve been in the old days!

Gothenburg had left a good impression on me, the slightly more rebellious cousin to Stockholm, contrasting and intriguing just the same and well worth a visit!
