Scandy Trip 2023 - PART 6

A look back at my scandy adventure, crossing Sweden and into Denmark, through vast forests and countryside, exploring Theme Parks, Sightseeing and mastering the Train Network!
Crossing the Øresund bridge into Denmark
Day 6 involved negotiating a replacement bus for a small part of the journey south to the rather obscure Mölndal station, which took around 20 minutes. There were 2 platforms here and nothing really resembling a station building, but thankfully the Öresundståg was ready to board for the relaxing, coastal 3-hour trip down to Malmö - perfect to rest my feet for a morning!
The temperature when I reached Malmö was probably the hottest of the trip, it certainly felt like it and indicative of how far south I’d travelled. Malmö is a peaceful city with an old town square and a river running around it. I wandered through the parks a while and grabbed myself an Ice Cream, before it was time to check-in at a hotel opposite the station.
After a bit of chilling, it was time to get my ticket across the World-famous Øresund Bridge, connecting Sweden to Denmark, via a 5-mile Bridge to an artificial island of Peberholm, and then a 2.5-mile tunnel to Denmark. It is an astonishing structure, and the vastness of the Baltic Sea estuary is laid bare, with barely any land visible at its centre. Much as it is a commuter route, what a way for people to go into work!
The contrast of Copenhagen Station to Malmö was just staggering. A bustling metropolis, and suddenly a lot more touristy. Not that that was a bad thing, just an interesting difference.
On exiting the station, you are greeted with an absolute peloton of cyclists. Statistically, over half the residents of Copenhagen cycle, they have priority here and pedestrians are secondary, so I had to have my wits about me! Perhaps there’s even more bicycles here than Amsterdam!
Anyway, I negotiated my way around Copenhagen’s harbour (where most seemed to be going for a dip), past Christiansborg’s Palace and ultimately to iconic Nyhavn, where colourful houses adorn the horizon (including Hans Christian Andersen’s orange house).
It was a beautiful evening with the sun going down, enjoying a rather expensive Fish and Chips and Cider and watching the world go by. Denmark’s dynamic was certainly different from Sweden’s, but I liked it just the same!
