Croatia and Montenegro Trip 2024 - PART 4
Staying in the picture postcard Old Town of Cavtat, exploring the City Walls of Dubrovnik and venturing across the border into Montenegro!
Lokrum Island
Before the journey home, there was time to spend the best part of a day exploring Lokrum Island, situated a 10 minute boat ride from Dubrovnik Port, and a welcome retreat from the busy streets.
As well as being home to other Game of Thrones filming locations (there was a big queue to sit in the actual ‘throne’ used in the series, but that didn’t hold much meaning to me), it also included a monastery, fortress, botanical garden and several friendly peacocks!
To the far side from exiting the boat, you could swim in the ‘Dead Sea’ lagoon-like area or relax on the rock peninsula aligned with the city walls.
There were many intricate paths and viewpoints throughout the island. There were also some fairly arduous ones, such as the ‘path to paradise’ to Fort Royal, towering high overlooking the City Walls. This still remained awe-inspiring from all the angles I had seen it, and worth the climb to the top for the views and to take in the beauty once again.
I also passed remnants of a ‘lazaret’, initially designed as a quarantine station to house citizens with room facilities. Some of the stone that was originally used for this would later be used to construct the City Walls.
There are a few restaurants and Ice Cream booths dotted around the island, I grabbed the latter and sat on the rocky beach watching the world and several boats so by on a very pleasant afternoon, to be my last in Dubrovnik.
What another amazing trip it had been, discovering the beautiful and relatively unknown haven of Cavtat, a place I will surely return to one day. The stark contrast it had to confined Dubrovnik. Both amazing in very different ways. Kotor in Montenegro an immensely exciting adventure with other like-minded intrepid explorers.
Overall, it was great to have time to properly relax and reflect. Emotional and unforgettable!
